From 1980 to 1994 my wife and I had researched and compiled a history of the descendants of our Stroud and Bates family . Information was taken from Federal, State and County records along with private records of genealogy libraries. We continue to research records, and gather family histories, documents, photos, and other media.
With the help of family and friends, and the continued support from my wife Judy, we hope to move all the family history from the various media formats we've generated over the years, into a rich online resource that we can share with others. We also hope to build an online community of others who share the same goals of preserving the rich history of the Stroud and Bates families.
Our research begins with Abraham Stroud who was born in North Carolina in 1740, and follows the lineage through to the my father, Gorman Spencer Stroud born on August 22, 1899 in Jackson Township in Effingham County, Illinois. Gorman married Julia Garner Bates of Watson, Illinois on November 5, 1921. Gorman and Julia had six children, Hershel Eugene, John Harold (Joe), Gorman Eldon, Evelyn Irene, Edward Leroy, and me - Larry Lee Stroud.
In the year 1790 there were only 53 families by the name of Stroud living in the United states. The 53 families consisted of 282 people. Of the 53 families, 14 families were living in North Carolina. Eventually we hope we will be able to trace the Stroud family back to their origin in England and along the way continue to gather more information on the Bates family
We share the same goals and wishes for the our other genealogy project which we have been working on over the years for my wife's family - Trowbridge.
